About Those 84 Bags of Flags

Over on 5th Street’s Blog, which I’ve been frequenting for months, since he found my post on the Colbert Reports coverage of the Olympic torch passing through SF amusing, I accidentally got way further into a debate over Palin than I wanted to. I’ve been pretty transparent about how I felt about her speech, and admittedly if I didn’t want to argue, I should have kept my mouth shut. I had a lapse of judgement, and didn’t realize what a shit storm I was starting.

However, once it starts, I feel obligated to defend/explain myself. And you know, I honestly have learned some stuff, when people aren’t trying to obscure the facts by talking about the non sequitur of the Code Pink protests at the RNC.

Anyway, one of the commenters over there brought up this story about 84 bags full of American Flags that were thrown out after the DNC, which were found by someone and turned over to the McCain campaign. I hadn’t heard that. It turns out that the reason I hadn’t heard it was because it was reported on Fox News.

So, when I dug into it, I found this write up on HuffPo. Basically, per the Democrats, the flags that were taken had been put into bags to store and transport, and they were taken without permission, or in other words, stolen.

And here’s the best part of the article:

Emails to three McCain spokespersons inquiring where the flags were found and how the McCain campaign obtained them were not returned.

So, those are both biased sources, and I didn’t see anything on any site that I figured was neutral. It’s a classic he said/he said story. However, I think that the fact that the McCain people won’t respond is telling.

Also, apparently the reporter on Fox News was referring to the flags as “The Stars and Bars”. Let’s have a “Come to Jesus” on this one . . . “Stars and Bars” is the nickname for the flag of the Confederacy, not our flag. Our flag is “The Stars and Stripes” or “Old Glory”. Ignoramus.

Just sayin’.
