Running Around All Night Long

Last night, after my last day at Huge Corporation, I went to band practice.   We’re still in the process of trying out singers.  So, it was a fun practice, but I didn’t really feel like I got to nail anything down.  It’s still just so much fun to go and play.  I wish we could practice more.

Afterwards, I was giving Ruckus a ride home.  That guy is super cool, and can always make me laugh.  Like, gerbil laugh.   He got me twice during practice last night.  We were talking about family, and about my uncle’s memorial.

Since he lives near the lake, I decided to drop in on some friends afterwards.  Wednesday nights, some folks from the musical theatre crowd hang out at The Alley, a dive-a-licious piano bar in the Grand Lake neighborhood.   I used to hang out there every so often when I lived in that neighborhood, and I’ve always been quite fond of the spot.

I’ve dropped in a few other times, but never found any of my friends, but last night that was not a problem.  I walked in, and found many familiar faces around the piano.   I also got the chance to make a lot of new friends.   It was a good time.

And they got me laughing, too.  In fact, I now have a new friend who is completely enamored of me for that laugh alone.  I laughed so hard and so long that I actually lost my squeak.  My throat was raw.

In the end, it was two in the morning before I got home.   That was actually the second night in a row that I was out until the wee hours.   I’ve really been enjoying myself lately.

And no, I didn’t sing anything at the piano.

Big Weekend

The fun starts tomorrow evening, with friends from Chicago, Deal’s Gone Bad, opening for  The Slackers of New York City at Slim’s in The City.   I have been looking forward to this show for weeks.  Months even.  It’s always good to see friends, and when those friends are also great musicians and performers, it’s like a double whammy.

Saturday I have another band rehearsal.  The last one was a lot of fun, so I’m looking forward to this next one.  We might have a singer by then.

Saturday evening my mom is getting in.  She’s going to be staying with me for over  a week at The Rock.   Hopefully we won’t be giving each other black eyes, sharing such close quarters in my studio apartment.

Sunday, Mother’s Day, Mom wants to go to the Winchester Mystery House.   I think Creeper is going to join us, as he’s lived in the San Jose area most of his life, and still has never been.

Monday I am taking a personal day from work, so I can spend some more time with Mom.  Three day weekends are the best.  Every weekend should be a three-dayer.

What are your plans for the weekend?

Coming to a Close

This weekend is the last for CCMT’s Cinderella. Closing night is tomorrow. I have some real mixed feelings about this.

On the one hand, it will be nice to have weekend evenings to myself again. (Well, myself and Monkey, Muckruckers, Slackers, Deal’s Gone Bad, Chris Murray, Phenomenauts, Maldroid, and all the other bands I plan on seeing in May.) My schedule has been almost grueling. I haven’t had a complete day off where I didn’t have to go anywhere or do anything for over a month. I had no idea it would take so much out of me.

On the other hand, I like seeing the cast and crew. I’m going to miss the social aspect, and the backstage antics. I enjoy being around creative, funny, and talented people, and they certainly are that. We’re all also very silly, which may be caused by the extreme indulgence in cookies and candy at the theater. I have met a lot of cool new people through this experience, and I hope to stay in touch with them.

I guess what I’m trying to say is, I’m going to miss it, but not that much.

Crazy Single Girl Life

Last night I had a meeting at a Lucky 13 with Pedro, and we discussed our plan for world domination, the soccer team we’re going to buy, and doing rails off of prostitutes asses in dressing rooms. I don’t want to put the cart before the horse, so I’ll write more about this when I’m actually officially in the band. Oops, did I just let that cat out of the bag?

Oh – funny side note, since I’m on the health kick, and I’m not drinking, I ordered a cranberry juice at the bar. I was sitting for a while, waiting, and there was another guy there sitting by himself. After a few minutes, this guy turns to me, and goes, “Excuse me, did you really just walk into a bar and order a cranberry juice?” What an ass cheese! So, I replied, “Yes! It’s both refreshing and healthy.” He didn’t really know what to do with that, so he just went back to crying in his beer, or whatever it is that ass cheese does.

Anyway, I was pretty amped up after meeting Pedro, and on the way home, I remembered that one of Baby Brother’s bands, Monster Pete and the Chiefs, was playing. I couldn’t remember where it was exactly, so I gave him a call. Hotel Utah in The City. I hopped on the freeway in Oakland, and I was there in about 15 minutes. (Gotta love living in Oakland.)

It’s been a long long time since I did something so impulsive and spontaneous. It was awesome. And I got to go out and see Baby Brother, and have a nice chat with him. And Monster Pete tore it up. I didn’t stay up too too late. I left right after the set, and was home by 11:30. By the time I loaded the CD Pedro gave me onto my iPod, flossed, and climbed into bed, it was maybe 12:10. I passed out. No insomnia last night.

When I woke up this morning, I had three picture mails, and a text on my phone that I had gotten in the middle of the night.

There’s a lot of little things that I didn’t realize I had let go of over the last few years, but now I’m getting back to myself. And myself, I am the girl whose life revolves around music, and who decides at the last minute that I want to go see that band, and I love when my friends reach out to me at all hours, just to say ‘hi’ and share some randomness with me.

And yes, Cam, those are some crazy mad props!

S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y Night – Starry Plough

This past Saturday I trotted down to the Starry Plough in Berkeley to see S.O.L., Monkey, and Los Hooligans. Beforehand I talked to Momser about how my life is changing. She was telling me that it was a grieving process (in more than one way) and that I needed to respect that and allow myself to go through it. She suggested a short wake, where I raised a glass to the life I knew, bid it a fond farewell, and accept its passing. I decided to celebrate life past and present with some very good friends, and, you know, beer.
I took many photos throughout the evening, but unfortunately didn’t remember that I had my
camera until after S.O.L.’s set. I really enjoyed their set, and was really intrigued with how they’ve changed over the years. I hope they play again soon, so I can maybe give it a closer listen.
