Crazy Single Girl Life – Kayphore’s Birthday Edition

So, last night was Kayphore’s birthday.   She wanted to go out to The City to see the former members of the Teenage Harlets play with various new groups.   So, we headed out to The Mission, and The Knockout.

After filling Kayphore’s belly with some Mexican foods, we bellied up to the bar, and I bought her first Jack and Diet.   It was the first of many, as it should be, because it was her birthday and all.

We sort of planted ourselves at the bar, for most of the night.   I, to be honest, was enjoying the company, and didn’t really spend much time paying close attention to the bands.

It was actually an almost tame evening.   There wasn’t a lot of debauchery, other than Kayphore was appropriately sauced.    But regardless, I took a few photos.

We had a very good time, but as the designated Sober Sister, I was out very very late.   Why am I still awake?   I don’t know.

The Only Thing Missing From My Life

It has been way, way, way too long.

The only thing better than seeing your favorite band is seeing your favorite band that happens to be comprised of some of your favorite people.    That’s what I have when I get to see Go Jimmy Go play.

What sucks is that they are far away in Honolulu, and they haven’t been touring in California for almost two years.

I miss Go Jimmy Go.  I miss my friends.   They’re due to have a new album next year, and I hope that means they’re going to be back to the mainland soon.

Recovering

I’m having a public appearance hangover.   Yesterday was a big day of being out and about, and today is the opposite.  I’ve spent most of the day on my couch, dozing off.     The only thing I did get done was a little bit of shopping.  I got my shoes for the wedding I’m in at the end of the month.  I’m really happy with the pair I found, and they were only $10.

But definitely, after yesterday, I needed a “Me-day.”

Because yesterday was a lot of performing in front of people.   For the first time in about 12 years, I played music in public.  The band played a block party in Alameda yesterday afternoon, which was our first time playing out.   I was pretty nervous about it, but according to the small group of friends who were there, they couldn’t tell.   I guess I can still put on a good game face.   I was just glad that none of the little kids tried to come up and touch the horn while I was playing.

And as if that wasn’t enough putting myself out there, then we went to karaoke last night.   It is official – I do not know all the words to “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend.”   Also, I always forget how low my voice is until I try to sing.

It was a fun day, over all.

It was good to get that first public show with the band out of the way.  Now I’m looking forward to booking a real gig that I can tell all my friends about, and possibly even get paid for a little.  Of course, whatever we get paid will go right back into the band.  We need to make CDs and T-shirts we can sell and make more money that we will then put right back into the band again.   This is not a money making proposition.

Now, I’m spent, though.  I think I’m going to make myself some dinner, and I might watch a DVD or something.

Just sayin’.

Just Wanna Cruise

I want this day to fly by as quickly as possible, because I’ve spent my next to last $15 on a ticket to see The Aggrolites and Struts tonight.  As the day is going by, I’m getting more and more anxious.  It’s been a while since I saw The Aggrolites, and going to see The Struts is always a good time.    I just want this day to go by a little faster.

It’s kind of slow around here.  The scary thing is, we’ve hired another person in my sub-department.  I am glad that the company is looking to grow and staff aggressively, but I wonder if there’s going to be enough trafficking to go around.   I shouldn’t worry about that, though, as it’s someone else’s problem, really.

Anyway, so I really wish I was a little more busy so that the day would be over.  Then I could go home, eat some bean stew, maybe blow on my sax a bit, and then put together an outfit for tonight, do my hair and make-up, and be on my happy little way to the show.   A lot of my friends and bandmates are going to be there, too, so it’ll be double the fun.

What’s better then Reggae and R&B on a Tuesday?  Absolutely nothing!

Just sayin’.

Vida de una Chica Soltera y Loca

I haven’t written anything over the weekend, because I have been traveling again. On Friday night, Ripper and I went down to meet Elle’s band in Tijuana. It happened to be Elle’s birthday, and we thought it would be a lot of fun to spend the evening with her and the boys in the last place I thought I’d ever be.

We flew to San Diego, cabbed to the border, walked over the border, and then caught another cab to the club where the band was playing. The club was something. It apparently used to be a very large cinema, but there was a fire that gutted the place, and the roof was destroyed. They cleaned it up, put up a stage, and voila, an outdoor music venue. We kept saying how this would never happen in the states, because of all the insurance and permit issues.

The opening band was this local ska-punk band. I never did catch their name. It was pretty cool. By the time the band went on, I was feeling pretty damn good. The band played a rocking set, and we were all pumped. When the gig was over, we set out to paint the town and eat some tacos.

We stayed out until the sun was almost coming up. I feel confident that I have seen and done what there is to see and do in Tiajuana at five in the morning. As you may expect, it’s not pretty. It’s also not quite as bad as all that either. It’s almost comedic. I’m not going to go into the specifics, because I don’t see the point. It wasn’t scintillating nor was it scandalous. It was just Tijuana.

The next day, we hoofed it back to the border, and along the way, some some of the other sites of the city. Including a lot of junk for sale on carts, some art, some roving musicians, etc.

Over all, I’d say it was a great experience in that it was an experience. Something I had never seen before, something I couldn’t have seen elsewhere, and something I never thought I would see. I’m glad I’ve gotten to this point in my life, where I have the opportunities to be spontaneous, and to do these unexpected things.

I didn’t tell my family that I was going, but I called Momser afterwards and told her I’d been. She thanked me for not telling her so that she wasn’t worried.

I went, I saw, and I didn’t get mugged or arrested.

Also, I accidentally had a bit of the tap water and nothing bad happened to me.

No pictures with this one, ’cause those are just for me and my friends.

Thank you!

Last week, I hit a milestone and broke a record with this here little journal.  On Friday, I set a new daily page views record.   The next day, I broke 10,000 page views since I moved to WordPress.

Here are some highlights from last week:

  • The Monkey Kids returned to the drive-ins.   An old tradition was reborn.  We caught a decent flick, and the train went by TWICE.
  • Also Wednesday, there was more piano barring.   I even sang a little. It’s was JMR’s birthday, too.
  • Friday was Maldroid at Bottom of the Hill.  Had some giggles with the girls, and managed to survive the sweltering heat.   Thank heaven for Pali’s passport application, which we made into a fan during the Maldroid set.   The guys busted out some sweet new tunes, too.   Oh, and there was a little bit of after party action at K4’s pad afterwards.   It was all about the Slurpees, Soap, and Gently Hot.  Oh, and A Grand Worth of Dildos! (Best Band Name EVA!  If my band didn’t already have a name . . .
I really appreciate your readership, and I hope you continue to enjoy my thoughts, musings, and silliness!
